Filipino Martial Arts

“I have discovered the martial arts to be a vehicle in which to grow physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. The Filipino martial arts is merely a vehicle for me to understand myself and others better… Hopefully, if people can appreciate the Filipino martial arts, they can appreciate other aspects of the Filipino culture. If they can appreciate the Filipino culture, it is my hope that they will appreciate things in other cultures as well. This understanding may help to bring the people of the world closer and, hopefully someday, they can live in harmony and peace.”  -Dan Inosanto

The Filipino Martial Arts (FMA) offered at Synergy Self Defense include Kali, Escrima, and Silat, and are based on the Inosanto Kali system developed by Guro Dan Inosanto. Weapons training consists of double stick, single stick, single dagger and double dagger. Empty hand training includes various boxing, kicking, grappling, and joint locking techniques.

The approach to training in FMA is unique because unlike most classical martial arts styles, students are taught the use of weapons first. This is done to easily illustrate the concept of angles of attack. Once this concept is understood, the student quickly progresses to empty-hand applications and soon learns, with certain modifications, how to deal with situations whether the attacker is armed or not.
